Print VS Online

Governor's Island, September 5--- Food Truck Festival. This is my dream come true: an island, looking out at the city, bright blue sky, perfect weather, great company, and trucks lining the island with all sorts of amazing food. Oh, and the best part IT’S FREE. One of my favorite things about this, obviously besides the food, is the people. It's easy for someone to take the wrong train, or walk the wrong way and end up somewhere they don't really want to be. But not here. It is very difficult for someone to wait in line, in the sun, for an hour, pay to take the ferry, actually take the ferry, get off the boat, walk around, and then realize you are in the wrong place. Everyone at this food lover’s convention wanted to be there, they were there on purpose. The lines for the trucks were long, very long, but the food was worth it. People come from all over; some even come from places farther then the 5 boroughs, an eclectic mix of all sorts of people gathered to in a sense celebrate good FREE food.

After I stood in a 25 minute line for delicious dumplings and was enjoying a taste of my friends even more incredible Lobster rolls, a normal looking guy, tall, nice clothes, could even be a student at Lang, came up to us and handed me a piece of paper. Thinking it was another coupon for discounted food I glanced at it and instead of being disappointed by the usual small print that reads “10% off when you spend $75”, I was pleasantly surprised! It was a small blue paper, about the size of an index card, with just the information of a website, www.thelmagazine.com. I was intrigued. Not only were they being very “green” (by using recycled paper) but they were not being annoying about fake advertisements, it was not a money making scheme, and it was not a bunch of words on a giant piece of paper that no one was going to look at. It was genius.

www.TheLMagazine.com, is the ideal place to go if you want to get a movie or book review, see what galleries are having art openings, read up on the best and most affordable places to eat and drink, get the news about all things cultural in New York City or if you just want to read the worldwide headlines. With specific sections on politics, sex, and fashion, this website covers a very wide range of topics. Not only does it give you up to the minute information but it also has everyone’s favorite category,” FREE STUFF”, where it housed the information about the amazing Food Truck Fest. Personally I think in the age we are in today more people turn to the computer for information. At first many people of other generations didn’t like this idea, I think mainly because it was and is not what they are used to. However I like to look at it like this, as long as “young people” are reading about what is going on in the world and we are staying informed, what difference does it make if we buy a printed newspaper or if we read it from a website on our iPhones? The important thing is that we are still reading at all, although that is another issue “young people” are dealing with. The power of the news is exactly that, powerful. Staying current is always going to be important, which is why with websites like LMagazine, it is geared towards a younger generation, touching on the significantly larger topics and bringing attention to smaller ones that are just as interesting and could potentially be overlooked. Yes, like websites newspapers have different sections but if you are really only interested in sports, or the arts, or the Op-Ed pieces, then websites are a good outlet to specifically choose what you want to read about. As technology advances the use of printed newspapers is going to become less and less while the use of online news sources will continue to increase, something the older generations will just have to come to terms with, while us “young people” continue to find other ways to communicate the news.
